St Mary's Well (Cornwall)
St Mary's Well (Cornwall) submitted by rogerkread : Not St Mary's Well! Looks like it was once a well though. This is to be found on the left hand side of the main road heading out of Looe to the West, marked as a spring on the 1:25 000 map. SX246535 is the approximate grid ref - hmmm, remarkably similar to the one given by Thorgrim except for two single digit changes. Maybe it is St Mary's Well after all! On a recent visit I attempted to locate both St Mary's and St Martin's wells in Looe without success. I asked various locals (as well as at the Tourist Information, but of course as ever they were of no help) and nobody had heard of a St Mary's Well. St Martin's near the church of that name was vaguely known though I didn't find it.
However, the apparent well in these photographs is unlikely to be St Mary's. The owner of the secondhand bookshop very near it informed me that it was formerly a copious town water supply fed from a large cistern well further up the hill which has been more or less destroyed by workmen during 'renovations', and the water now is largely stagnant. Possibly the cistern well was St Mary's, though the bookshop guy did not think this was likely.
He did however tell me of the remains of another potential well site, and I have included a photograph of that above as it hardly warrants a separate entry.
