Standing Stone (Menhir) in Anglesey (Sir Ynys Mon)

'Erect Stone' on 2" drawing is in the northeast angle of the crossroads at SH38188118 approx. 80m northeast of the siting symbol on the current 6" AP. [1]

In a field adjoining the churchyard, there once stood an upright stone over nine feet high, popularly called Maen Llechgynfarwy, supposed to commemorate St. Cynfarwy, patron saint. It was removed during the last century. [2]

Standing stone (site of). [3]

Removed in the 19th century. Reported to be at least 3m tall. [4]

"LLECHCYNFARWY, a parochial chapelry in the hundred of Llyfon, county Anglesey, 3 miles S.W. of Llanerchymedd, 2 from Gwindy, its post town, and 9 from Holyhead. It is a small rustic place. Near the church is a stone pillar 9 feet high. The living is a curacy annexed to the rectory of Llantrisaint, in the diocese of Bangor. The church is a cruciform structure dedicated to St. Cynvarwy, and stands on the same spot as one built in the 7th century. The parochial endowments are worth about £25 per annum." [From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) - Transcribed by Colin Hinson ©2003]

"In a field adjoining the church is an upright stone, called Maen Llechgwenvarwydd, which is more than nine feet high, and appears to be of great antiquity." (A Topographical Dictionary of Wales by Samuel Lewis, 1833)

Another missing stone; given the so called "practical" nature of the type of person who would wantonly destroy such sites, it is probable the stone was re-used nearby as a gatepost or part of a wall.

There are two very handsome gateposts in the vicinity that are possible candidates.

Just found a reference to this stone in a list dated 1855 called "Early British Remains in Wales".

It says:

"A few years ago a large maen-hir stood
in a field close to Llechynfarwy Church. It was, how-
ever, thrown down by a stupid tenant, and broken up
for the purpose of mending a wall."
