Berry Castle is an Iron Age Hill Fort deep in the middle of Huntshaw Wood, near Great Torrington in North Devon.

A slight univallate hillfort which occupies the summit of a high hill overlooking the valleys of Huntshaw Water to the north and Darracott Brook to the south. The site is aligned east-west and is defined by a rampart bank and outer ditch which surround an internal area 118m long by 52m wide. The rampart bank stands up to 5.3m wide by 3.8m high and the ditch measures up to 4m wide and 2m deep.

The Friends of Berry Castle is a new group who's main aim is to preserve the 2,600 year old banks and ditches.

Berry Castle Open Day, Sunday 17th July by Andy B on Monday, 11 July 2016

The Berry Castle Open Day, Sunday 17th July, 11 am - 4 pm.
Travel back to the Iron Age and have the opportunity to learn the ancient skill of dowsing. Contrary to popular belief, dowsing is not just about 'finding water'. The Devon Dowsers and the Tamar Dowsers will be conducting a live dowsing survey of Berry Castle during the Open Day and you can join in. Grab a rod and dowse!

Refreshments on sale during the event will have an Iron Age theme with Iron Age Pottage served from a tureen over an open fire, Berry Bacon Butties, Berry Dogs (sausages in a bap) Devonshire cream teas, Strawberries and cream, snacks and cold drinks.

Berry Castle is an Iron Age hillfort that lies in woodland in Huntshaw Woods, north Devon. It is a scheduled monument and until recently was one of the area's best kept secrets with few people visiting it or even being aware of it. To help with preservation and to raise the hillfort's profile a Friends of Berry Castle group was formed one year ago. The Friends group has been busy orchestrating the removal of damaging trees from the site (working with Devon Clinton Estates, landowne, and Historic England)

A geophysical survey was completed one week ago and the results will be released during our Open Day. Next year we hope to carry out an excavation of interesting 'lumps and bumps' that lie beyond the scheduled area.

Formal opening of the day at 12 midday followed by guided tours, the Big Berry Wave, award of certificates (Duke of Edinburgh) to local army cadets who helped us to clear the site and release of the results of our first geophysical survey of the site.

Berry Castle, Huntshaw Wood, Huntshaw, near Torrington, North Devon EX38 7HH

Tel: 07952028013

Directions: The event will be signposted from the B3232 (the Barnstaple to Torrington Road), and from the Gammaton Road (Bideford to Torrington Road) As the roads are very narrow there will be a one-way system in place. Parking is available (follow the signs) To get to the site there is a walk through the woods and up a hill. For the less-abled there is drop-off point at Foxes Cross where transportation to the site will be available. Berry Castle lies in woodland and access is via tracks and some inclines. Stout shoes are recommended
