markj99 visited There is a large lay-by at NX 64015 78916 on the A713. Dalarran Holm Standing Stone is c. 250 N of the lay-by, safely accessible by the edge of the field rather than walking along a busy road.

This impressive blade-like standing stone is visible from the A713 and is located on the floodplain of the Water of Ken to the south of St John's Town of Dalry, Dumfries and Galloway

It is marked on the OS Explorer map 319 (Galloway Forest Park South) as the Standing Stone of Dalarran.

For more information see Canmore ID 64205 which, in 1849 recorded the standing stone: "is a whinstone slab, uninscribed, facing E-W and measuring 8'6 1/2" in height, the broad face 3'8" at the base and 2' at the top while the thickness is 11". One of the old lairds of Holm excavated around this stone, when he found an antique sword which was kept in his family until recently ."

A 1975 site visit added: "There is only one standing stone at this site. It is situated in a pasture field and measures 2.4m by 1.0m wide and 0.3m thick. The ground at the base is slightly hollowed." A 1971 site visit reported Mesolithic finds in the immediate vicinity.

Video: Is a Scottish King Buried Under This Stone? by Andy B on Friday, 19 August 2022
(User Info | Send a Message)
On the A713 between Castle Douglas and Ayr, there is a solitary standing stone in a field.
Just what is the stone for, and how old is it?

The stone sits not far from the water of Ken on the east bank. It is a thin slab north-south orientated.
