Misc. Earthwork in North Lanarkshire

Construction of the Antonine Wall, running west to east from the Firth of Clyde to the Firth of Forth, commenced around 142 AD. The c. 39 mile defensive wall was commissioned by Emperor Antoninius Pius to control the rebellious tribes north of Hadrian's Wall. The remains of the wall at Croy in North Lanarkshire follow Croy Hill ridge. The wall takes advantage of natural contours with a ditch excavated to its north. A path can be followed to Croy Hill Fort, one of 19 forts reinforcing the defence at regular intervals.
