Carreg Cennen Cave
Carreg Cennen Cave submitted by Horatio : The wall and covered walk way (with loopholes) leading from the bottom right of the corner that leads to the tunnel and the cave. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A cave in Carmarthenshire where ancient human remains have been found. This is one of at least nine caves in the limestone castle rock. It is reached from the castle by a vaulted passage lit by loopholes, which leads to a stair down into the large cavern mouth. This is blocked by a stone wall and has been fitted out as a dove house. The cave rapidly narrows, leading some 50m into the hill.

A trench dug in the floor allows ready access. Towards the end water drips into a natural basin. Source: Coflein

In the mid nineteenth century four mid fourth century Roman coins, together with a spindle whorl, were found in the debris below the cave mouth . In about 1907 bones of two adults and a child, together with a perforated horse tooth, were found within the stalagmite deposits in the cave. Three human teeth were recovered in 1980.

Cave earth deposits were noted in two of the other caves in the castle rock.
The human remains found in the castle cave are conventionally dated to the Upper Palaeolithic, the period before the end of the last Ice Age. Other Roman coins found in the castle may signify the presence of a settlement on the rock. As adapted in the castle period the cave may have served as as grotto and conversation piece, as well as a dove house."

Carreg Cennen Cave

Showing the full rock outcrop in which the castle and hence the covered walk way (with loopholes) leading from the bottom right corner of the castle that leads to the tunnel and the cave. I think I read somewhere that there are caves at the foot of this outcrop too that may have signs of earl... (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Carreg Cennen Cave by Anonymous on Sunday, 27 August 2023
I read the book, "The Gauntlet" by Ronald Welch in the 1950s when I was a child and the book had been recently published. It made a great impression on me and I attribute to it my love of reading and my love of history. Much of the story is based around the castle and when my family visited some years later I was able to relate what I saw to what I had read about. I clearly remember descending to the cave and, this being the 1960s we were able to fully explore in the most dangerous ways. The book was written for confident child readers so I won't recommend it but if you would like to know more you can find information here - www.thebookbag.co.uk/reviews/The_Gauntlet_by_Ronald_Welch

My Welsh ancestors left for America circa 1680. I hope to return one day but tick tock. In any event, I always view these sites with awe and pride in my Welsh blood. I know this site from previous research and would consider it an honor to be able to see it in person some day.

Great web site and love the newsletter. Keep up the good work.

Explaining the cavern would be pretty useful.
