A new exhibition has recently been opened, called The 'Sights and Sounds of Newton Abbot'.
On display is the famous prehistoric 'Kingsteignton Idol', which is usually on show at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. (That building is currently closed for renovation and refitting and should be open next year.) Meanwhile, the owners - a local clay company - have loaned it to Newton Abbot Museum for this exhibition.
(See website for more details, also the RAMM site page on the Megalithic Portal.)

Newton Abbot museum has a special room for Great Western Railway history enthusiasts. [Not exact quote:] "By the time they leave, visitors will be able to understand the principles of Brunel's Atmospheric railway, which was built between Exeter and Newton Abbot. They can also 'have a go' in a working signal box."
Newton Abbot was once a major railway station on the South Devon Railway.

There is also a model of John Lethbridge's 'Diving Engine', a fascinating diving machine invented by this local wool merchant in the early 1700s. (See 'Home' page on website for more.)

If you look on streetmap, at the blow-up that shows the street names, it is at the junction of St Leonards Road with Wolborough St. West of the previous site.
On 1:25000 scale, it is just left of 'Police Station' ('Pol Sta').

The old museum closed a few years ago, but it has taken a while to renovate a town-centre church to house the collection. According to a news item in devonlive today, it will be open to the public from next Saturday....
Best of all, for the first time it will display the Milber Votive treasures that were found on Milber Down Camp on the edge of the town. In the past they were kept at Torquay Museum.

To find it on foot, walk up the main street, Courtenay Street, towards the historic clock tower. (Stop a while to read about how William of Orange made his first declaration here after landing at Brixham - https://www.newtonabbot-tc.gov.uk/storage/sites/2/2019/11/barrie_james_document.pdf ), and keep walking past the tower, where around the corner to left is a pedestrian crossing which will take you directly to the building.
Alternately, park opposite the large carpet shop, near the Police Station, and it is beside you.

(The old museum is now a ladies' hairdresser K2 where, coincidentally, my granddaughter Eden works!)

Thanks Angie, we'll have to estimate the new location as a map ref and move the dot, then I'll add the news of it re-opening. Good news.
