In the church of St Afan, near Builth Wells, stands a 2 and a half foot high vertical pillar-stone with an equal-armed cross within a circle. This is said to date from the so called Dark Ages - the 7th to 9th century.

In the porch wall there are four fragments of 7th to 9th century decorative work, including herringbone, a cross and circles. Then, outside in the churchyard what is thought to be the tomb of St Avanus. The large slab, 7 foot in length, on top has a faint inscription which says: "HIC JACET SANCTUS AVANUS EPISCOPUS" and when translated reads 'Here lies St Afan, Bishop'. The graveslab may date from the 7th century, though the stonework beneath it is more recent. It seems the slab originally stood up-right.

The church here at Llanafan Fawr stands on an Iron Age mound, and there is a ringwork ditch surrounding the site. St Afan or Avanus, the church patron, was the son of Ceredig Wledig and St Tegfedd. His brother was St Teilo and his cousin, St David. Some historians think he was the first bishop of Llanavan Fawr, but this now seems unlikely. His day is 16th November.
