Hi Pab, just thought I should say St Eluned's shrine use to be at Llanelwedd church, part of it may still be there.

Hi Pab where have you been - welcome back ! The information I have given is from my own book 'A Guide To The Saints Of Wales & The West Country, Llanerch, 1991. St Ludd is one and the same as St Eluned who is also called Aled and Aleddha. Its very confusing, I know, but these Welsh/Celtic names are a problem. Llanellwed north of Brecon is also named after this 5th century virgin martyr and daughter of king Brychan of Brecknock. She was, apparently, buried at Usk. I hope this is of some help, even if its quite confusing. Cheers now.

Hi Sunny - can you please let me know where the information came from for your post - I had understood that the chapel and well north of Slwch Camp related to St Eluned, but you mention another saint?

I had planned to visit the area soon as I am following up sites related to St Eluned, and was working on some site details and aerial photos of the well and chapel on COFLEIN

At Pencefngaer 1 mile east of Brecon is Slwch Tump an Iron Age camp, but it was occupied during the Roman period - the 2nd-3rd centuries, and then by the British when the Romans left Wales.

In the 5th century CE the northern edge of the hill was the abode of St Ludd (Aluned) who lived as a hermitess there. However, she was discovered there by a pagan chieftain. He beheaded the saint where an ancient stone once stood and where he head fell a holy spring burst forth from the ground 'Penginger Well' or St Ludd's Well. The site of this well is now lost.
