Anne T visited on 9th Jul 2018 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 St Mungo's Holy Well, Bromfield: The kissing gate from the north of the churchyard led down some sandstone gate, although the gate had been wired shut with a cable tie, so we had to clamber over. Even though there had been a long period of dry weather, parts of the ground around the well were still damp and the cattle’s hooves had sunk deep into the ground, creating tussocks and hollows. The well cavity itself was dry. In a very scenic setting, with lazy cattle (and a bull) lazing against a nearby hedgerow, looking over at us, but fortunately too hot to move. A lovely well in a very nice, tranquil setting.

Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Cumbria

This holy well is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 9509 and Historic England List ID 1276083.

Located to the north of St. Kentigern's Church in Bromfield village, the well is accessed by a kissing gate from the north western end of the churchyard, down some steps into a field. The well is covered by a small, circular well house, placed over the medieval well. The well house dates to 1878. Historic England describes it as "hammer-dressed red sandstone with iron clamps … under conical stone cap."

There is a worn inscription on it which reads: "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation."

Whilst the well was dry at the time of our visit, the ground around was damp and had been heavily trampled by cattle in the field, which made navigation close to the well interesting!

[Update July 2022: The well is also recorded in the Cumbria Historic Environment Record, HER number 3725, which adds: "A holy well, reported to be upstanding in 1978. Field subject to infrequent ploughing, has drains across site".]

St Mungo's Well (Bromfield)
St Mungo's Well (Bromfield) submitted by Anne T : The well chamber was dry at the time of our visit (there had been no rain for several weeks). Strangely there was no sign of a pipe, so the water must rise up straight from the ground into the chamber. The ground around the well was still damp in places and had been heavily churned by the large cattle in the field. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Whilst this is a signposted footpath to the well, someone had fastened the gate with a substantial cable tie, so we had to clamber over. (Vote or comment on this photo)

I understand the name "Mungo" means 'beloved'. St Kentigern was the son of St Thenog or Enoch, who gave her name to a railway station! Just to mention here that the Irish St Fiacre gave his name to taxi cabs!

According to the church leaflet, "The well on the North side (50 yards) was probably the original meeting place for worshippers. The water from this ancient well was used by the village into the 1950s. The cover for the well was restored in 1878."
