Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle in Cumbria
The stone wall remains and restoration of Hardknott Roman Fort, located below Hardknott summit on a rocky promontory overlooking Eskdale. The Fort consists of a thick outer cut stone wall enclosing 3.23 acres, now restored up to 2.2 m high, with four entrance gates and four angle watchtowers. Internally it is composed of a commanding officer's house, a headquarters building and a granary. Outside the main wall to the south is the remains of a bath house complex fed by water from a nearby stream.

The Fort defended Hardknott Pass and was situated on the Roman road from Ambleside to Ravenglass port.

Hardknott Roman Fort (MEDIOBOGDUM) submitted by MonumentMan : The Bath House complex outside the Fort to the south. Consisted of a hot room, a warm room and a cold plunge pool. A circular feature outside the rectangular baths is thought to have been a sauna room. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hardknott Roman Fort (MEDIOBOGDUM) submitted by MonumentMan : The northwest angle watchtower position. It is thought a walkway parapet gave access to the towers as they have no doors at ground level.
