Modern Stone Circle / Monolith in Dumfries and Galloway

This is a modern cairn (Stupa in Tibetan) built at Samye Ling Tibetan Centre in 1996 from local stone, concrete and crystals gathered from around the site where they had been left as offerings to the various Buddha images.

It is placed as an offering to the Nagas (protective water spirits) at the spot where Moodlaw Burn, seen here directly behind the cairn, joins the White Esk which runs from left to right of this photo. There is another watersmeet 2km south of Castle O'er where the White Esk joins the Black Esk. This can be seen from the humpbacked road bridge and car park next to it and was traditionally a place for weddings/handfastings to be celebrated.

You can get to Samye Ling by car or bus and if you start on the Temple steps and walk straight ahead, across the car park and down a track behind the cafe, keep going down to the river and there it is.

This is a lovely peaceful place to visit and I would also recommend a visit to Fairy Hill, just across the road and tea and cake in the Tibetan Tea Rooms.
