St Triduana's Wellhouse
St Triduana's Wellhouse submitted by KiwiBetsy : The original building, built for James III about 1477, comprised a lower vaulted wellhouse and an upper chapel. During the Reformation the chapel was destroyed but the lower vault continued in use as a burial vault for the Lairds of Restalrig. In 1906 the vault was excavated, buttresses replaced and a new roof, complete with statue of St Triduana, was added. It is easy to see the difference b... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Midlothian

St Triduana’s Wellhouse and Chapel is located next to St Margarets Parish Church off Restalrig Road South in Edinburgh.

For more information see Canmore ID 52104, an extract of which reads: "It was already in existence in 1477. Its design, a two-storeyed vaulted hexagon, 36'6" in external diameter, is unique. The lower chapel, built partly below ground, survives intact; it was restored in 1907-8 after use as a burial vault. The upper chamber, a chapel of unknown dedication, was demolished in 1560. Traditionally, St Triduana, in the 8th century, blinded herself and thereafter retired to Restalrig, where she was buried. Her shrine became a place of pilgrimage for those with diseases of the eye, a practice mentioned as late as the 16th century."

Note: Access must be arranged by contacting St Margarets Church office.

St Triduana's Wellhouse
St Triduana's Wellhouse submitted by KiwiBetsy : St Triduana, an 8th century saint, removed her eyes and sent them to Nechtan, a local chieftain, as a rebuke for his unwelcome attentions. After this she retired to Restalrig where she was in due course buried. Her well became a place of pilgrimage for those with diseases of the eye and was recognised as a place of healing until at least the late 16th century. (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Triduana's Wellhouse
St Triduana's Wellhouse submitted by KiwiBetsy : Behind a locked gate, steps lead down to the wellhouse. The site of the well was recognised due to constant flooding following the restoration of the burial vault in 1906. (Vote or comment on this photo)
