Probable destroyed stone circle in Dumfriesshire. In the 1841 New Statistical Account for Westkirk Parish it was recorded that "there are several whinstones placed erect in the ground which have every appearance of the remains of a druidical temple". By 1912 all traces of this circle had disappeared.

Note: NGR variously given as NY3190 and NY2991.

Re: Westerkirk by Anonymous on Sunday, 04 September 2016
Just looked at google maps on scale showing 200metres scale and there is a circle evident roughly 500m north west of Enziehall Farm at approx 1100. The diameter of the circle looks to be about 100 metres. Don't know much about megalithic structures or farmland in all honesty, so this could be some form of natural ground marking or perhaps formed by agricultural works but though it worthy of a mention.
Thanks,
Rob McNulty.

Re: Westerkirk by Anonymous on Wednesday, 16 July 2008
I was born at Westerkirk Mains in 1940. My name is William (Bill) Beattie. My father was James Beattie and mother Agnes Morrison Beattie. I left for other places in 1958 but during my time there I wandered far and wide over all the nearby hills. My father had a great interest in ancient history and I clearly remember him showing me an old map of Westerkirk that marked a spot near the confluence of the Megget and Esk that was described as a Druid Temple. I asked him about it and he said that the last stone was removed in the early 1900's. As the years go by I wish I had the funds to undertake a geophysical survey of the zone. There could well be buried stones there. Of later interest was an Oak tree that was cut down circa 1945 at the northern end of what was locally called the Brown Wood...maybe 200yds south of the farm house. My father told me that oak trees were often planted near river confluences and it was likely that the odd hand-fasting ceremony took place there. I found a gold ring near the site dated to 1837...it was a betrothal ring with two clasped hands and channelling for the couples hair strands.
All very interesting.

The coordinates given on this Web-site are for the centre (in this case the church) of the parish of Westerkirk.

As I have said above, the circle is most likely near to Westerkirk Mains, on the land to the South of the house, on the land between the River Esk and Meggat Water.

That's the location where the SMR has put it, but nothing can be seen on the ground, and there are no indications of the site on any air photographs.

Having checked the 1841 New Statistical Account for Westkirk Parish, it would seem that the stone circle was near Westerkirk Manse.

Hello,
That's the best location we have to go on. You'll have to do some hunting and asking around locally.
Good luck,
Andy

I don't think that Westerkirk has a stone circle.

I would love that it did.

I live there, so please send me accurate coordinates and I will review the site, take a photo, and post it here.

Thanks
