Formby Point submitted by baz : Prehistoric footprints on the foreshore at Formby. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Prints, thousands of years old, but these aren't rock-hard fossils. They were baked into the silt and covered with sand and later deposits which have protected them ever since. Now erosion is uncovering these ancient silts, but what the sea reveals it also destroys - the footprints last only until the next high tide or a few weeks at most once exposed.

Note: Sad to hear of the death of Gordon Roberts, prehistoric footprints researcher. Here's a reminder of his discoveries.

Sad to hear of the death of Gordon Roberts, prehistoric footprints researcher by Andy B on Thursday, 29 September 2016
(User Info | Send a Message)
Liz and Helena write: It is with much sadness that my sister and I announce the death of our dear father, Gordon Roberts, at home on 23 August 2016. His intellect, kindness and wealth of knowledge will be missed by many. His love as a father will be missed by us.

We hope readers will continue to visit Formby Point and think of him as you carry out your own research.

Liz and Helena

Would you like to help record new exposures of prehistoric footprints on the foreshore at Formby before they are lost to the tide? The team at Formby are looking for volunteers to visit the foreshore and work with archaeologists to record the human and animal tracks preserved in the hard sediments in order to build up a picture of the activity that occurred some five thousand years ago. Free. High tide 09.16 hrs.
