We had our first Maindee Camp tourist visitor a couple of weeks back!

Is it time to open a gift shop I wonder :-)

I was able to show him around what are left of the features of the camp.

While digging a pond a few years back, I ended up lifting some of the old path that went to the summerhouse that was one the site - according to old maps of the location. I don't know how far down you would have to go to reach any of the older constructions (if any).

The wood to the north of us is shown as Gaer Wood on OS maps.

I live in a house on top the area known as "The Camp Wood". While there are 4 houses on the site, the area to the east is still open.

I presume this is the area in Clevedon Road known as "The Camp Wood". We have lived there since 1964 and had always understood that it was an Iron Age Hill Fort. The wood behind is on an old OS map as Gaer Wood, which would tend to support this.

I did research the area some years ago and came up with a welsh name for the area which translated as "The Graves of The Strangers". I have not been able to find any reference to this anywhere.

Also, when the prefabs were pulled down, someone in the South Wales argus mentioned that it was a good opportunity to excavate the site of some local chief.

Is all this linked to Maindee Camp ?
