Possible standing stone in Blakemere. Built into the church wall, used as a gatepost, recently had the ivy removed and caught my eye so took some photos to see what other people think, its near to other prehistoric sites such as Dorstone Hill, Arthurs Stone, Peterchurch, Wern Derys etc. could be nothing but looked out of place to me.

Blakemere is not noted in the Doomeday book, the church was originally 12th century, but after a very destructive fire it was rebuilt in more or less the same style in the late 19th century.

There are many similar stones to this dotted around the Southern side of the Wye between Hereford and Hay on Wye and the Dore Valley between Hay and Abbey Dore. I have recently seen a picture of one at Common Bach near Snodhill in the Upper Dore Valley that I personally have not visited but is sat in conjunction with other stones to form a gateway that will stop animals but humans can climb. The chap who sent me the picture reckons from his research they are basically 18th century and started to appear when the Medieval pack horse bridges were modernised and the landed gentry started making their mark on the landscape. When I am better I will go and photograph the ones I know about and the apparent complete one at Common Bach.

this is possibly a parish boundary stone to mark the separate parish boundaries , but it could have been re used from an earlier site

I was curious to find out something about this stone. The only thing I came up with for this church was information about the church - see Brithsh History Online for Blakemere. I'd be really interested to see the photographs when they come through.
