Torwoodlee submitted by cosmic : Site in Scottish Borders: View over Broch towards entrance (Vote or comment on this photo)
A lowland broch, not too far from the better-preserved example at Edin's Hall, Torwoodlee well rewards investigation however.

Access involves a steady climb of about 45 minutes up well-marked tracks. The broch is not visible from a great distance, as it is slightly below a hill summit, concealed in the curve of the hill. It is well covered with turf, giving it a reather pleasing, soft appearance.

Although the walls survive to less than 1m in height, the plan of the broch is very clear to see. A door check can be seen in the entrance passage, and an intramural chamber with the very base of a staircase is visible. The broch was built about AD 100 on the site of an earlier hill fort. There are signs of the fort having been deliberately dismantled - perhaps an early failure to obtain planning permission ? Concealed in the plantation to the north of the broch is a substantial linear earthwork.

Torwoodlee Aerial Video by Al_Murray on Thursday, 04 June 2020
(User Info | Send a Message)
Aerial video of Torwoodlee Broch site.
As well as the Broch itself the outer ditches can be clearly seen.

This site is also on the line of the linear earthwork known as the Catrail (or Picts Work Ditch)
