I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 21st Jun 2022 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 The Kendal Cross: located on a window sill in the Lady Chapel (east end of south aisle) in the Parish Church of Kendal, Holy Trinity. The fragment was sited in strong sunlight at the time of our visit, so difficult to photograph. Such a huge church, apparently the widest in Cumbria, and also the oldest in Kendal, with the site older than the building, as 'evidenced by the 8th/9th century cross shaft'. A replica of the cross sits outside the western end of the church, on the green between the western entrance gates and the church.

Ancient Cross in Cumbria. The Kendal Cross at Holy Trinity Church, Kendal, Cumbria. SD.517922. In Holy Trinity Parish Church, Kendal, on a windowsill in the Parr Chapel stands an Anglian cross-shaft, dating from 850 AD. It is a bit eroded by time, but the scroll-work designs can be made out. A bit ordinary, really, but worth a look.

The church site is Anglo Saxon and a church has almost certainly existed here since then. However, the present church is largerly a Victorian ediface. The carved stone angels (some nicely painted) around the inside of the church are recent but quite nice. Outside there are gargoyles (water spouts) around the sides of the building, and they look quite intimidating to say the least.

The Kendal Cross
The Kendal Cross submitted by Anne T : The cross in front of Holy Trinity/Kendal Parish Church. I understand this is a replica made using the fragment of cross shaft displayed inside the church (although I've lost the reference - will add it when I find it!). (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Kendal Cross
The Kendal Cross submitted by Anne T : Displayed on the eastern window ledge in the Lady Chapel in the south aisle, this fragment is recorded on the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture as Kendal. At the time of our visit the stone was in bright sunlight, so was difficult to photograph. The Corpus record states that this stone is from the late eighth to ninth century, and has been displayed upside down! (Vote or comment on this photo)
