Lady Hill
Lady Hill submitted by LivingRocks : The top of the barrow in 2021 1s becoming quite overgrown, the base of the dead tree is full of beer cans & assorted other rubbish. Lady Hill is also threatened by a proposed major building project in the immediate vicinity and has currently no formal protection, it could very easily become yet another lost site. A rather mysterious mound near Warrington. Is it a round barrow? It was excavated in 2007. Sheila Mughal writes: A few years back, myself and a group of folks interested in local history, plus Mark Olly (of Granada TV's Lost Treasures fame) and some archaeologists from Liverpool University, went to dig up Lady Hill at Golborne near Newton Le Willows. We did dig up a partially burned skull and it is our belief this is tumulus, but it has not as yet been recognised or marked on the map.

Steven Dowd transcribed the following from the 1916 Vol II, J H Lane book on Newton. Its a description of the walk from Haydock Park along the Dean Valley, Past Dean Dam, Lady Hill, Castle Hill and on towards Newton Lake Dam, and County Bridge.

J H Lane has this to say - "We climb the slope, and, seeing the keeper, ask permission to accompany him on his morning round. We pass the farm-house occupied by Mr. David Garton, and note the large fields on the right, in which the celebrated seed specialists, Garton Brothers, made their interesting and valuable experiments in grass and corn cross-fertilization. Soon we reach the wood, and, keeping to the winding path, look admiringly at the giant boles of century-old beeches, chestnuts, and other trees. In a short time we arrive at Lady Hill, a bowl barrow some six or seven feet in height and 160 feet in circumference - half the circumference of Castle Hill. Around its rim are eight mighty beeches with long boughs stretching parallel with the ground and with tops towering above those of the adjacent trees. Originally there seems to have been twelve beeches upon the hill; and, in gazing upon the mound and the trees, we wonder for what purposes the former was raised and the latter were planted" For full transcription go here.

The hill was excavated in 2007, organised by Bob Hayes, a local historian. This was supported by Steven Dowd, (also a local historian), Mark Olly, the boy scouts who provided digging support, Sheila Mughal & family, (also local historian) & Liverpool archaeology team, plus lots of others. We found traces of a cremation & part of a human skull. The full dig was recorded and is available on YouTube over several episodes in you search on "Lady Hill Dig" See below for the links.

Got to visit Lady Hill for the first time today; lovely ambience from the trees, but this barrow is in such a sad and sorry condition.

Re: Lady Hill by Anonymous on Wednesday, 21 September 2022
Its barely recognizable these days - almost totally engulfed by the undergrowth.
Shame there is no official recognition or protection, as the farmland directly adjacent is earmarked for development. The only other thing I could find was the series of Youtube videos with Mark Olly during the excavation in 2007 - which are actually very interesting.

Walking here again yesterday. Its a shame there is no official protection, no information on Historic England website & no other information online following up the excavation 14 years ago.

Mark Olly made 3 very interesting looking series for ITV Granada between 2005 and 2008 - more here - Mark Olly's Lost Treasures - I wonder if any of them are out there online anywhere?

Clifford Bob Hayes who lead the excavations at Lady Hill barrow in 2007 has sent me several photos of the site, these include a couple of old photos of the barrow, and also some of the excavation itself. He has given me permission to up-load these to the site page, so I will be putting the photos on in the next few days.

This is very interesting, Andy. I have sent a message to Bob Hayes and a link. I know him through Facebook. I also know Mark Olly through that as well and have two of his books. Thanks.
