Bristol City Museum
Bristol City Museum submitted by TheCaptain : The Pool Farm Cist slab is now back on display in Bristol museum, in the "Curiosities" section, where they are asking children to leave their suggestions for its meaning, but with no further information. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery is located in a splendid building at the top of Park Street, which includes a fine archaeological collection from the region.

From now until June 2017 they have a fine new display "Stone Age to Iron Age" which shows and explains many local archaeological finds from the region and southwest of England, presented in a well thought out manner. The famed Pool Farm Cist rock slab with carved feet, is not part of this display, but is available for viewing elsewhere.

There are also collections of archaeology, ethnography, Egyptology, geology and natural history, not to forget the various artwork including of course Bristol's very own Banksy.

Address: Queen`s Road, BS8 1RL
Phone: 0117 922 3571
Opening Hours: Open every day, 10am-5pm
Admission: Free, except to certain exhibitions

This is the "Metallic" display. Sorry about the crappy picture from my phone, but it does give an idea of what is shown.

Re: Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery by Anonymous on Sunday, 16 September 2007
I took my children to the museum last year - and to my astonishment, there was a mini cooper on a rotating turntable on display!!!

I think from that moment on, the "museum" lost all credibility in my eyes....

Brett.

September 2007 and the fate of the Southwest Archaeology department of Bristol Museum is now sealed. The entire section has been closed and all exhibits removed from display.

In their place ? A sort of play area with PC interactive computer screens on how to design your own museum or suchlike. I wonder if the museum "directors" got this idea from their costly "factfinding" tour of Australia they recently undertook ?

Scandalous.

I was surprised when I read this, so clicked on the web site link on this site page, and was taken to Bristol City Council's website where there is an A-Z index. When I went to 'M', then 'Museums' and 'Changes to displays' (I think it was!), I read that they are improving that section and will re-open in 2008 with an updated section which is more accessible, of British and other items. Of course, it would be a real shame if the SW region wasn't represented.

I just tried this, and went to the Council website following the link. After museum, then collection - archaeology, only to find the page deleted !!!

Good to see the Japanese Art section is still there. Thats really relevant to the local area !

It is rumoured that the City Council is to close the archaeology department and displays, and replace them with something more PC and fashionable. A modern sculpture display has been mooted.

Latest rumours have it that the archaeology department and displays have a reprieval, as there is no money available to close it, and make the changes.
