Sunny100 visited on 30th Sep 2010 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 5 St Wilfrid's church is usually open to the public every day. It is located just past the Roman museum. Two small cross fragments on windowsill in Dutton Chapel (Choir).
The church of St Wilfrid at Ribchester houses two fragments of an Anglo-Saxon cross. St Wilfrid's was built close to the Roman fort of Bremetannacum, probably next to the principia. In fact the church is surrounded by Roman earthworks. In the 7th century CE the place was Christianized by Bishop Wilfrid himself.
On a window ledge in the Dutton Chapel are two fragments of an Anglo Saxon Cross, dating from between the 7th-9th century CE. The large fragment is part of a round headed wheel cross, while the smaller fragment possibly from the same cross, or another, has loose knotwork or ropework that is perhaps more reminicent of Celtic decoration, rather than Saxon.
