St Ann's Well (Brislington)
St Ann's Well (Brislington) submitted by HOLYWELL : The repaired well head of St. Anne's Well Brislinton (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Bristol. Located in a public park is one of the cities few surviving and doubtlessly most famed Holy wells. Now remarkably like a green oasis in some of the worst areas of industrialised Bristol is St Anne's wood, which was acquired by the Bristol Corporation, and since then very little has been done thankfully to change its situation.

The circular brick rounded well, was restored early last century. A suitable inscription reads:
" Wishing well, St Anne's Well." This Holy Well was associated with the chapel of St Anne, which stood about 300yards to the NW; throughout the Middle Ages , pilgrims were made here, and especially by the sailors of Bristol, Henry VII. Visited this spot in state in 1485, and hither his Queen came in 1502."
"The Chapel , dating from about 1392 was destroyed with Keynsham Abbey, to which it belonged, in 1539 by Henry VIII."
The well was controlled by a custodian or warden. One particular individual is remembered in the Keynesham church. In 1889 action was brought about concerning a public right of way through the wood and passing the well. This footpath had been used for centuries for passing to St Anne's Ferry, and to make pilgrimage to well and chapel. Currently, a project is going ahead to restore the well to its original site and remove the capped site.
To find the site take Wick Road from Bath Road - Grove Park section of the A4 and continue until you come across Station Road - St James Park after crossing the railway line on the right. Here a path goes through the park and by following this you should come across the well.

I tried to access the well by the indications given here, but found that Station Road has been closed and there is now a Old car and metal deposit. If anybody can give indications on how to access this well, please specify. Thanks,

I've corrected the grid ref, it's in St Anne's Wood north of the railway line.

Is it drinkable? If not, are there any drinkable springs in/around Bristol?

Hello, My name is David Davies; I spent much of my childhood living in St Anne's Park and spent a vast proportion of it playing in the woods. The well was a very familiar landmark and I am dismayed to see that it has lost its roof. It once possessed a conical hat. The irritation I had in those times was not being able to get any water from it or make any wishes.

Re: St Ann's Well (Brislington) by Anonymous on Saturday, 10 December 2011
It is proposed to refurbish the Well, by constructing a new improved cover of steelwork; in the form of a cage. The cage would be designed tastefully so as not to make the appearance to appear gaunt and uninteresting. When the cage is complete, the Well can be refurbished, and reconstructed to its former appearance in 1991; when it was demolished for the sake of safety, by BRISTOL CITY Council.

According to William Worcestere's account of 1480 there were once 32 votive models of ships in the chapel of St Anne, five of them fashioned of silver.
