Ancient Settlement in Cheshire

These two enclosures in the Mersey Basin lie at Leghs Oak Farm in High Legh and were identified by aerial photography in 1981. The first is rectangular and circa 30 metres by 15 metres, and the secomd is oval, around 60 metres in diameter. Limited excavations were again carried out by Michael Nevell between spring 1986 and spring 1988, as well as a number of resistivity surveys, field walking and soil samples in order to try and establish a date for the enclosures. Very few artefacts of any period were discovered, but results seem to indicate that they were of late prehistoric and Romano-British date.

For further information see Nevell, M.D. “Excavations on a Roman-British site at Legh Oaks Farm, Northern Cheshire 1987-88”, Manchester Archaeological Bulletin volume 4 (1990) and "Prehistoric Cheshire" by V & P Morgan, Landmark Publishing (2004).
