I have visited· I would like to visit

TheCaptain visited on 23rd Sep 2022 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Day on Hadrians Wall. Drive to Housesteads, bus to The Sill, cup of coffee, then walk up to the trig point on Winshield Crag before walking back eastwards along Hadrians wall to Housesteads Fort

Anne T visited on 23rd Jun 2019 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Access: 5 The Sill, Once Brewed: After visiting Great Chesters/Aesica, we popped over to the Sill for a cup of tea and a bowl of soup. It took three attempts to get our (simple) order correct, although as the Sill was popular with walkers, it meant queuing up each time to get the correct items. I was curious to see if Tynedale North of the Wall Archaeology Group had their display about their surveys at Edges Green and Cleughfoot. We walked round the very small exhibition, which included a piece of rock art (on loan from the Great North Museum) and an inscribed Roman stone, but could see nothing from the group. It was difficult to know if the display was aimed at adults or children; having wandered around it, most of it seemed aimed at the younger age group. A pleasant place for a rest and refreshments, but I had expected more of a museum.

The Sill
The Sill submitted by Anne T : The Sill building, as seen from its north eastern corner. It is located in Once Brewed, immediately next to the B6318 (Old Military Road). (Vote or comment on this photo)
This recently constructed, purpose built visitor centre is dedicated to our understanding of the landscape, and building our relationship with it. An interactive exhibition, a refreshment area/cafeteria, a gift shop and a youth hostel combine with conference facilities to give a large, modern centre with roof walk.

Information for visitors can be obtained through their website - see The Sill. "The Sill is the most significant initiative to be undertaken in rural Northumberland in a lifetime and the largest undertaking by any National Park".

The Sill is open from 9.30am until 6pm every day of the year (except Christmas Day, when it is closed). A charge is made for parking on exit (number plate recognition systems in operation).

The Sill
The Sill submitted by Anne T : Located in the interactive exhibition, this stone is "the right-hand section of a dedication slab from the Roman Milecastle at Hotbank, just a mile or so from here (The Sill) along Hadrian's Wall. The full inscription means 'this work of the Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus …. the Second Legion Augusta under Aulus Platorius Nepos, propraetorian legate'. The information sign explains that A... (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Sill
The Sill submitted by Anne T : This stone with rock art motifs is on loan from the Great North Museum: (Hancock and the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne). The sign says it comes from Lordenshaws, although I've not (yet) been able to trace any reference numbers from ERA or the museum for it. (Vote or comment on this photo)
