I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 31st Mar 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Crosshall Cross: Details of this cross had printed out along with some details of Kelso Abbey, which we visited beforehand. Having found it was not far from Kelso, we decided to take the short drive to see it, and it was well worth it. This was a little further out of Kelso than we originally thought, but it was a pleasant drive. Whilst the cross was 'protected' by an old iron railing, with the remains of an old signpost next to it, the fence was a taut wire/barbed wire fence with no 'give' to squeeze through, so we walked down the lane, away from the farm to the gate into the field. The ‘gate’ into the field with the cross was right at the cross roads, so we climbed over and walked back down the field of pasture to take a closer look. The low, very bright, sun, made it difficult to photograph its eastern side with its man and its hound (we thought it was a lamb), but it was well worth seeing this cross, with its Latin crosses, shields, incised man with his hound, and a Crusader sword.

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : The western side of the cross, as seen from inside the field. This face has "has a Latin cross with pointed ends to its arms, surmounted by shield", although the carvings are worn and difficult to see, with the cross easier to see than the shield. Ancient Cross in Scottish Borders

This medieval disk headed cross sits by the roadside some 300m to the south west of Crosshall farmhouse, and is dated by Canmore to the 12th century. Recorded as Canmore ID 58543, it is thought to "be a memorial stone erected to mark the grave of an important person".

Over 3m in height, the cross shaft is inserted into a large socket stone, itself raised upon a bank of stones, making the base over 1m in height. "Each side of the shaft bears carved decoration; a naked man and greyhound on the east side, and a coat of arms on the west, south and possibly the north side. On the west and north sides, there are also depictions of a carved cross. A sword is depicted on the south side". Canmore states the symbols may represent the Soulis family, and indicate the monument may be associated with a Crusader.

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : This photo shows what remains of the carving of the calvary upon with a cross is placed, on the northern (narrow) face of the cross, adjacent to the lane. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : The cross from the south east, inside the field, showing its eastern (broad) and narrow (southern) face. The south side is incised with a shield and a sword. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : The base of the cross, showing how the large socket stone is in turn laid upon a base of smaller cobbles/stones. Whilst the cross has an older, iron railing round it to protect it, and an old signpost lying on the ground, there is no direct entry from the lane down to Crosshall farm (being bounded by a modern, tightly strung wire/barbed wire fence). We walked to the corner of the field away from t... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : The western face of the cross, with its wheel head. Below this is an incised shield and a Latin cross.

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : We took this incised figure, on the eastern side of the cross, to be a lamb, but Canmore says it's a hound. It is just below the figure of the man with the in-turned feet and is presumably his dog. Photo taken by Jennifer T.

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : The roughly incised lower half of the figure of a man, on the eastern face of the cross, which it was all that was possible to see with the bright sunshine behind, and being so high off the ground. He has 'pigeon-toes' (Canmore correctly says his feet turn inwards!).

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : The cross, as seen from further down the lane towards Crosshall Farm (some 300m to the north east of the cross).

Crosshall Cross
Crosshall Cross submitted by Anne T : There are a series of holes/cups/solution holes all around the top of the socket of the cross.
