Holy Well / Spring in Wiltshire

Pevsner notes that the spring is covered by a small 14th Century building with a steeply pitched roof that was rebuilt in 1784. Who is to argue?! The original building that stood here belonged to Monkton Priory. It now contains cisterns and pipe work which distributes the spring water around the locality. The well is reported to be haunted by a black monk.

This conduit house is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1019385 and Historic England List ID 1021838. It is also listed as Pastscape Monument No. 208033, which includes a photograph of the conduit house.

It's at ST 80363 65692 and the building is still there and is rather fine. You can see it from the road just to the southwest of the Google Streetview location above.

There is a well in the small field just to its west too.

Thanks, Andy_Norfolk. I've found the Historic England and Pastscape entries for this well housing and added it to the main site page. Thanks!

It''s said on nights that are moonlit the ghostly monk appears at the monks conduit, for what he seeks maybe it''s in case the pipe leaks. The Well House written by Andrew Williams on the 28/12/217/.
