Ancient Cross in Staffordshire

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) feature a page for this medieval cross - see their entry for Market Cross, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

TNA include an image of the cross (undated) and tell us "The old town’s Market Cross can be seen outside the north end of the Guildhall, but originally it was opposite the Ironmarket up the High Street.  It was first built sometime in the medieval period (exact year seems to be unknown), but required some restoration work on it in 1579, which was organized by the town Mayor: a Mr Randle Bagnall at the time.  It’s thought that the five steps upon which it stood were also erected around this time.  However, these steps and the cross were moved a few years before 1820 and then resurrected by the Guildhall.  The curious standard lamps were also added to the top of the cross when this restoration work was done."

The cross is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 75864, which gives different information: "Nearly adjacent to the Guildhall is an elegant Stone Cross surrounded by a flight of steps for the accommodation of the market. The present lantern type cross surmounts an earlier circular pedestal base of five steps ... A tablet at the base of the column states that the present cross was erected in 1820, replacing the medieval cross restored in 1575."

Note: Do you have any information or photographs of this cross? Do you know if it dates from the 1800s, or if its origins are medieval?
