Ruined Stone Circle in Wiltshire

They can be seen (in disarray) at Old Wardour Castle (English Heritage site). There WAS quite an extensive set of standing stone, complete with a cove. The stones from this were moved from Place Farm, Tisbury, to make a grotto for Old Wardour Castle, nearby, in the 18th century, by Josiah Lane of Tisbury (the contractor).

Tisbury Circle submitted by TimPrevett : It's always a pleasure to find something prehistoric going on somewhere when you weren't expecting it. That was the case at Old Wardour Castle. Having had a lifetime of driving past, and having enjoyed it as one of the locations for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I got to visit on 30th March. We enjoyed the castle, and loved the grotto. It wasn't until a few days afterwards we found the grotto has...

From The Ancient History of Wiltshire by Sir Richard Colt Hoare (published 1812) Chapter No. 11 - Station 8: Fovant.
Amongst the manuscript papers of the late Mr. Cunnington, I find the following note. “In a field near Place Farm, in the parish of Tisbury, was a circular work with a vallum set around with stones, and a large stone placed erect in the centre. On removing this stone (which was twelve feet high, and four feet wide) by Lord Arundel’s order, to the Old Castle at Wardour, a skeleton was found at the depth of eighteen inches under the surface, deposited close to the central stone."
