Hells Canyon Archeological District submitted by Flickr : Hells Canyon Petroglyphs 2 I climbed around in the rocks and found this group farther from the river and it didn't look vandalized. I only took three photographs as I ran out of film and there was no store (or anything else) on that part of the Snake River. The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area’s main feature is Hells Canyon, known as the deepest canyon in North America. It is 7,993 feet deep from the mountain peaks of the Seven Devils to the Snake River, and 10 miles from rim to rim. The Snake River, Hells Canyon Wilderness, Seven Devils Mountains, and Imnaha and Rapid Rivers are other significant features.

The area’s magnificent rugged-landscape is rich in cultural sites (American Indian and early settlement), geology (uplands, benchlands, canyonlands, and mountains), native plants, and fish and wildlife species. The Wild and Scenic Snake and Imnaha Rivers, many miles of trails, limited road access, and distant landing strips facilitate access to users, while preserving the remote characteristics of the HCNRA. Besides impressive scenery, the area offers opportunities for fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, picnicking, rafting, boating, wildlife watching, cultural site exploring, and other outdoor recreation activities. Viewpoints, campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launch facilities, and interpretive sites provide amenities for visitors recreating in this fascinating and rugged landscape.

Advisory: Most of the trails Hells Canyon are in rattlesnake and poison ivy country! Water on the trail is scarce and unsafe to drink if not previously treated.

Hells Canyon Archeological District submitted by Flickr : Hells Canyon Petroglyphs 1 Three Hells Canyon petroglyph pictures that I took over forty years ago. I don't know if these have been vandalized or not by now but I was stunned to find them. Someone had scrubbed chalk into this group, probably to take photos (It wasn't me). It also looks like someone tried to chisel part of the rock surface off. That happens to rock carvings and the pieces are then ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Hells Canyon Archeological District
Hells Canyon Archeological District submitted by Flickr : Boulder pictographs Once you arrive at the pictograph site high above the Snake River's right bank, there is little doubt why the place was chosen as a place to leave art. There are some large dark river rounded boulders on a bench with spectacular views in all directions. The centerpiece of the site is a "sombrero" shaped rock with water pockets and smooth water channels carved by the Snake... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Video: Proving Up and Settling Down: Stories of Life in Hells Canyon by Andy B on Saturday, 10 November 2018
(User Info | Send a Message)
The basalt cliffs of Hells Canyon have witnessed the ebb and flow of Native American tribes, trappers, miners, and homesteaders as each has left a mark on America’s deepest river gorge. This film brings Hells Canyon to life through the accounts of historians; Horace Axtell, a descendent of Chief Joseph’s band of the Nez Perce; and early Hells Canyon residents, Violet Wilson, Ace Barton and Joe Jordan. These old-timers share stories of work and family, isolation and ingenuity, and a deep respect for the canyon they called home in the first half of the 20th Century.

The Copper Creek Clovis Point from Hells Canyon by Andy B on Saturday, 10 November 2018
(User Info | Send a Message)
The Copper Creek Clovis Point from Hells Canyon, Northeastern Oregon

Clovis points along the Snake River occur near the end of
the anadromous fish runs at Auger Falls and on the upper
Snake River plain between American Falls and Bannock
Creek. However, before the discovery of the Copper
Creek example described here, they were not known to
occur in anadromous, high-energy, streamside locales
as far downstream as Hells Canyon. The Copper Creek
specimen is an impact-fractured Clovis point made from
Gregory Creek obsidian, which outcrops 150 km. to the
southwest. This source joins Timber Butte, Big Southern
Butte, and the Walcott Tuff as the earliest obsidian sources
exploited by Paleoindians along the middle Snake River
