bat400 visited on 1st Jan 0000 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 3 Now make your way to the 44th and Washington rail station and travel eastbound. You'll cross the Salt River over Tempe's Town Lake. Get off at the Veterans Way / College Avenue stop at Sun Devil Stadium and Hayden Butte. The rail trip itself will take about 10 minutes. If you walk to the east end of the station platforms and face the butte, there are trail heads to your left. The majority of the petroglyphs are on the south and east side of the butte and if you decide to walk to the top, there are views of the river valley and the extensive modern development of Phoenix and Tempe. Again, you may wish to walk only a short way up the trail or all the way to the top of the butte, taking anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes at this stop on the trip. Next go to "Lomo del Rio Ruins". http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=17351.

Hayden Butte
Hayden Butte submitted by TimPrevett : Hayden Butte (pronounced bute) has a lot of petroglyphs when you know where to look. All the glyphs are on sides of the mountain facing the sun (ie. south and east - as it seems is the case with most sites). Most are recessed off the paths and are inaccesible due to wildlife and heritage preservation but can be viewed adequately from the paths, and with assistance (ie camera zoom, binoculars). ... Rock Art in Arizona.
Hayden Butte rears up beside the Salt River, and in this modern age, is probably best known as the backdrop for the Arizona State University Sun Devil football stadium. But the Hohokam people (500-1450AD) built a small village at the base of the butte and carved petroglyphs on the rocks above them.

The area is part of the Tempe Parks Department and trails lead to the top of the butte, past the rock art.

Hayden Butte submitted by bat400 : Salt River Hohokam by Public Transit and Foot. The trip starts at the Phoenix Area Light Rail station, just across the street from Pueblo Grande. After enjoying that site and its museum for an introduction to the Hohokam, then take the rail line to Hayden Butte. After viewing the petroglyphs, cross the Salt River on Foot to visit Loma del Rio Ruins, and then make your way back to the rail line. ...

The petroglyphs are situated on the south side on the lower slopes, visible from the trail. Will take a look and photos in the morning. Credit to Tourist Information on W 3rd St for info:

Walked up here yesterday, ignorant of the petroglyphs! Only 2 miles away from where I'm staying so will find out more and take a closer look again.

Possible the glyphs may be off track and therefore off limits.

As of 10th August 2009 the trails are in bad condition. Erosion and lack of ongoing care make for demanding walking. Signs and information plaques are largely missing or defaced.

Easiest access is via Rio Salado Parkway (IIRC) on its N side.

I just added a link to the Parks Department listing. It has a link to a trail map and also a photo of the rock art.
I hope you're taking plenty of photos. Take care.
