Canyon de Chelly - White House Ruins, Apache County, Colorado. This Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) ruin was built and occupied between 1060 and 1275 AD. It's estimated that about 100 people lived in the settlement. The site is named for white "plaster" used to coat the wall of the canyon that served as the back wall of the rooms built against it.

This is the only ruin in the canyon that may be visited without a guide. A trail a little more than a mile long takes you from the south rim of the canyon down 500 feet to the floor and across the wash to the site.

Although Canyon de Chelly is a National Monument, it lies wholly within the Navajo Nation. The land is not deeded to the federal government. On the canyon floor there are many individually owned farms and homes. With a few exceptions a guide is required to tour the many ruins and rock art and to view the plants and geology...

Canyon de Chelly - General Information by bat400 on Tuesday, 12 September 2006
(User Info | Send a Message)
"De Chelly" is pronounced "de-SHAY" and it's thought to be a particularly mangled attempt by a Spanish speaker at "tsegli," Navajo for "rock canyon." Topically, you can find photos taken from the canyon floor (Stephen Shore) and a first hand description of guided tour (Hampton Sides) in the October 2006 issue of Outside, the outdoor sporting and nature magazine. Sides mixes touring the canyon with historic (as opposed to "prehistoric") information.
