Ancient Settlement and Heritage Park of the indigenous people of the Northern Plains, Saskatchewan, Canada. The archaeological sites found within the Wanuskewin Heritage Park include numerous habitation sites; four bison kills sites, a tipi ring site, and a boulder alignment. These sites show intensive occupation particularly of the Opimihaw Creek Valley over the past 6,000 years.

Evidence for even earlier occupation of the region is revealed by artifacts recovered from the uplands about two kilometers north of the park area. These materials suggest an occupation time depth of about 7,000 to 8,000 years in the general area.

From the Heritage Park web site: "Our award-winning architecturally-unique Visitor Centre is your gateway to the incredibly beautiful unspoiled natural prairie landscape with 360 acres of scenic trails, interpretive sites, archeological digs, fauna, flora and herbs.

Learn the stories and lifestyles of the Northern Plains Indians who have gathered at this one meeting place for over 6,000 years.

Experience Northern Plains culture through hands-on demonstrations, traditional cuisine, art galleries, indoor and outdoor activities and overnight Tipi wilderness camps."

Wanuskewin Heritage Park submitted by Flickr : The interior of the interpretive centre at the Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada has bison and tipis, which people associate with the native people of the Canadian prairies. When I visited the park in 1996, there was a great museum at the interpretive centre. The museum does not exist any more at the Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Wanuskewin Heritage Park submitted by Flickr : Medicine wheel, Wanuskewin, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan No-one knows what medicine wheels were for. I think they're native North American's answer to henges. Wanuskewin Heritage Park
Wanuskewin Heritage Park submitted by Flickr : Wanuskewin Heritage Park is located near the west bank of the South Saskatchewan River, just three kilometers north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. For more than 6,000 years people have gathered at this place. The nomadic tribes who roamed the Northern Plains came to hunt bison, gather food and herbs, and to find shelter from the winter winds. Some of the sites uncovered date back thousands of years. ...

Archaeological Research at Wanuskewin Heritage Park by Andy B on Wednesday, 19 November 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
Intensive archaeological research began, at what is now Wanuskewin Heritage Park, in 1982 with two years spent on reconnaissance for archaeological sites. In 1984, a long term research program was initiated to investigate, in a more detailed manner, the real significance of many of these sites. To date there are 19 pre-contact sites to be found within the valley and two historic sites making this region the longest running active archaeological site in Canada.
