Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Co. Kerry

The tiny village of Killabuonia (in the Glen) is 3/4 miles south-west of Cools (Ballinskelligs) on the Iveragh Peninsula; to the south is Bolus Head and St Finan's Bay. Here there is a monastic site with a ruined chapel, a pillar-cross, St Buonia's holy well and grave, and some hermits cells.

Close to St Buonia's chapel (now ruined) stands a slender pillar-stone with two thin inscised crosses carved onto it, one of the crosses is carved within a diamond-shaped design, while at the top there is a chevron shape design. The crosses are referred to as of Celtic origins from the 6th-8th century CE.

At the side of the pillar-stone is what is known as St Buonia's grave or bed or 'The Priest's Grave'. This is formed from two slab-stones, one larger than the other, leaning inwards at 45 degree angles and, at the front, a smaller-shaped stone bearing another thin incised cross and below that a hole the size of a person's arm. This was, apparently, to allow pilgrims to insert their arms in order to touch the saint's bones. However, the grave is probably a prehistoric cairn/cist that pre-dates the coming of Christianity. The early Christians making good use of this ancient stone monument.

Within the monastic enclosure is a medieval chapel, now in ruins, which stands on the site of a monastic church founded in the Dark Ages by a local saint called Buonia; there are also some hermits cells
scattered around the site, and the saint's holy well - a place of pilgrimage and healing in times gone by.
