Re: Pennycroft Well by Anonymous on Monday, 22 October 2007
Hi There - my evidence from local sources states that the well still exists. The shaft was covered over with railway sleepers and earth. In the 70's a local resident, looking for a cure for eyesight problems (one of the magical properties of the water we are told), located the well and extraced a bottle of water.

The wells ancient sister, Maidens Well, is now allegedly buried under a driveway at 21A High Wood Uttoxeter. This well was truly ancient - local historian Francis Redfern extracted an OGHAM stone from it in the 1800's, putting the datreable evidence at at least 1500 years.

regards

David Denny
