Maiden's Well
Maiden's Well submitted by HOLYWELL : Close up of the well. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Staffordshire

The only healing well surviving in the town. Situated on the hill along High Wood road above the town and now enclosed in the front section of the garden of 21a Highwood Road (hence the 2 description - easy to get to but on private land). The spring arises in a roughly two feet wide circular well basin lined by old brickwork, although I could see no evidence of running water, the water is nevertheless clear and the well has a sandy bottom. A mesh cover has been placed over the well to prevent leaves fouling it and it is well looked after. Said to be curative and haunted by a ghost of a young women. It is thought that Rykenald Way or Maiden’s Way giving name to the well rather than the other way but I would think it was clearly very old and the two are related.
