The correct (and officially recognised) Map Reference for this delightful Bi-vallate (with a medial Ditch) Iron Age Camp is SU07488676 - the Camp may be approached (with a very short diversion over a temporary permissible footpath) along an old Drovers Road (now a Bridleway) named Mud Lane which runs west from the small hamlet of Restrop which is about one mile south of Purton on the Cricklade to Royal Wootton Bassett B4553 road - the footpath avoids the 'Mud' whilst the Local Council undertake some works to the DRoad -

The site is remarkably well preserved with the two banks (inner 5m high; outer 2m) and the medial ditch (3 metres deep) for two-thirds of the works under tree cover - there are two entrances one in the NW and the other in the E - it is suggested that the NW entrance is the later but contradictory evidence might be seen by considering the landscape - to the NW there are also traces of an outer ditch (perhaps defending the NW entrance) - Mud Lane runs outside the full length of the S outer bank (up to and as far as the NW entrance) where it seems to travel on first West downhill and then NW uphill -

The area of the Inner Camp is approximately 3.5 hectares - the sides of the two banks and the ditch are so steep that no fencing is required to hold the substantial flock of sheep present at the time of my visit (Oct 2014) - flints and a gold coin have been found (according to OGS Crawford) but no formal excavations have ever taken place - the whole area is an Ancient Pasture protected by an SSSI order with some rare protected species of grass - this indicates that the Camp is effectively undisturbed

The site is mentioned on the pastscape website Wiltshire: Purton: Ringsbury Camp: 216512;

Just to the North lie the remains of Braydon Wood a Royal Forest (complete with Hunting Lodge within the curtilage of what is now Red Lodge Farm) which used to be owned by the Duchy of Lancaster - a number of place-names near the Forest use the word 'Battle' but the opinion of Local Historians is divided as to whether it was against the Danes between 789AD-800AD or was one of the many skirmishes during the Civil War - there are claims furthermore that a Cannonball was found near Red Lodge - maybe there were two separate battles for history suggests there was a strategically important 'stone slab' bridge that crossed the River Key which flows in a NE direction between the Camp and Red Lodge roughly equidistant between the two

A very rewarding site which is easy to visit
