Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Hampshire. Easy to find by the side of the B3347, the well is in one of the gate posts of The Old Clock House, now a Bible College. It is downhill and across the river from St. Michael's Church.

The well has just been cleared by volunteers from the Parish Council, and photos should be going on to the Parish Website shortly (sopley.gov.uk). Next steps are to repair and repoint the brickwork, and reinstate the water from the spring as roots have destroyed the old lead pipe.

Just a caveat: this well was one of a number I identified twenty years ago from map work as being likely holy wells because of their proximity to churches - some are more plausible than others. In fact this is one of those occasions when my hunch proved justified as this has clearly been regarded as a holy well at some time in the past, hence the Victorian structure which is very clearly Christian. But the name itself merely relates to my conviction (at that time) that every holy well close to a church had to bear the dedication of that church!
