Clay Hill tumuli
Clay Hill tumuli submitted by JimChampion : March 2005. A worm's eye view of the round barrow on the "lawn" at SU239023. The barrow has some multilation (rabbits?) and although it is very low it stands out clearly on the grassy grazed plain. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrows in Hampshire

Two pairs of round barrows on a heathland/lawn plain in the south-west New Forest. The northernmost pair at SU235027 comprise a much mutilated bell barrow (15m in diameter with a 2.4m berm on the west side) and a better preserved bowl barrow (16m diameter and 1.5m in height) with a visible ditch. Hampshire treasures says that both barrows were excavated in 1949, and three stone cists with cremations were found. These barrows are also known as "The Burrows".

The other pair of barrows are found close to the milestone marker on the disused Brockenhurst-Burley road at SU239021. The closest is a gorse-covered and rabbit-mutilated bowl barrow (11m in diameter and 0.8m high) with traces of a ditch. About 200m to the north, out of the gorse and on a pony-grazed lawn is a dimpled bowl barrow (about 20m diameter) with a low profile.

Access These tumuli are all a short walk from the Clay Hill car park at SU233024, to the south-east of Burley. It is also possible to park in a large lay-by at Wilverley Post on the northbound A35 (at SU242020) and then walk west along the disused Burley-Brockenhurst road.

Clay Hill tumuli
Clay Hill tumuli submitted by JimChampion : March 2005. Looking north at the bowl barrow at SU239021: its visible just to the right of the milestone. The milestone (a comparatively modern creation) stands at the side of what was once the Brockenhurst-Burley road, but is now just a track accessible to walkers. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Clay Hill tumuli
Clay Hill tumuli submitted by JimChampion : March 2005. Looking north at the bowl barrow at SU235027. Much of the gorse around the barrow has been burned recently, and some of the gorse on the barrow has been cut back manually. The nearby bell barrow is only just recognisable and not at all photogenic. (Vote or comment on this photo)
