I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 20th Sep 2019 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Sunderland Museum: Despite having been here for many meetings and conferences over the years, I've never wandered around this museum - a series of permanent and special displays in themed rooms off the main corridor leading from the main entrance/gift shop to the cafeteria. Having spent longer than we thought (well, it was VERY interesting!) at St. Peter's, we knew we didn't have time to go the Minster to see their stones collection before shutting to visitors at 2.30pm, so came here instead (it was supposed to be our third, and last, stop of the afternoon). We focused mainly on the Secrets of the Past Exhibition on the ground floor, which has some of the Anglo Saxon stone fragments recorded by the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture. Not all of them (mostly the smallest) fragments were on display, so I have asked if it's possible for us to see, and photograph, these. There were also prehistoric cists with grave goods, stone axes, jewellery, and other artefacts on display. The museum seemed largely deserted at this time of day, apart from a few people coming down the staircase at the rear of this exhibition hall. We enjoyed a rather large, and tasty, lunch in the cafeteria before leaving.

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This stone, number 5 in the display cabinet, is known as the Tidfirth Stone, after the name carved in runes on it. The museum information sign drops behind the bottom of the display case, so is not legible in its entirety, but Guy Points, in his "Gazetteer of Anglo Saxon and Viking Sites: County Durham and Northumberland (2012), page 312, records the words: "Are the people on this stone standing b... Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This stone fragment is dated to the eighth century, and is on loan from St. Peter's Church. It is recorded as the AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 06. It was found during the 1866 restoration of St Peter's and preserved for many years in the vestry. Whilst broken and worn in places, the carving on this face remains largely crisp and clear. "A triangle of loose pellets fills the hole points between the ... Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : The small fragment is dated to the last quarter of the ninth to the first quarter of the tenth century, and is recorded as the AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 22. Accession no: TWCMS: G1764, no 6 in the display cabinet. The Corpus tells us: "It is not certain whether this is part of a cross-shaft or slab since there seems to be part of a chamfered dressed face behind the outer roll moulding." Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This small fragment, numbered 8 in the display case, is dated to the last quarter of the seventh century, and is recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 19. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This architectural fragment is dated to the last quarter of the seventh century, and is recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 17. Accession no: TWCMS: N806. The Corpus notes that "The unweathered surface of the fragment seems to indicate that it was part of an interlace fitment of the church ... it could be some form of pilaster". The museum information sign adds: "Similar interlace roundels are f...

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : The other side of Monkwearmouth 16, displayed in a cabinet at the back of the Secrets of the Past Exhibition room. It is mounted on a revolving display, so the whole of the 3D carving can be seen. The Corpus debates: "(this) could be (the) terminal of the arms of a chair, but the more massive proportions of the Monkwearmouth animal seem to imply that it was the tip of a column-like feature rather ...

The AS Corpus record it as Monkwearmouth 16. It was found in 1969 in the foundations of a modern wall in Hallgarth Square, which was built on top of a medieval and Saxon wall line. The carving is 3D and the museum information sign includes a picture of a cha...

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : Described as being "Unique in Anglo-Saxon England, this fragment is displayed right at the top of the cabinet and lit by bright spot lights, I tried a number of times to eliminate flare, but failed. Reconstructed from its four separate pieces, the Corpus records this classical Ionic capital as being in the Dept. of Archaeology at the University of Durham, although the museum has given it an access...

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This small fragment of a small grave marker is dated to the last quarter of the seventh to the first quarter of the eighth century, and is recorded as the AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 04. It is unusual in that it has runes in its upper left hand quadrant, and Anglo Saxon capitals in its lower left capitals. The Upper left quadrant reads: eo II —; the Lower left quadrant: [ĂID] II —. The Corpus ...

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This corner of a cross arm or base is dated to possibly the eighth century and is recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 02. It was also found during excavations at the Priory in 1966. The Museum information sign differs in its description from the Corpus, saying: "(this is a) corner fragment of carved sandstone This fragment may have formed part of the ridged roof of a small shrine. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens submitted by Anne T : This fragment of cross arm, displayed behind glass, dates to the early eighth century. It is recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 01. It was found during archaeological excavations at the Priory in 1966.
