Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Hampshire

Situated beside the busy A32, you would never know this was here unless you were looking for it. Heading north, after the road crosses the river a lodge will be found on the left. A sign says "Private, no vehicle access", but there is also a footpath leading across the land. Following the main road north from the lodge, a depression may by seen on the other side of the hedge and at the bottom of this is the well.

It is brick and stone lined, with water near to the surface, and the remains of an access path may be seen. I returned to the lodge, and was readily given permission to take same photographs.

My wife and I visited the well last weekend. Rather than park further down the A32 and walk along a fairly scary road with no footpath, the smart move is to drive into Soberton Heath, park at or near the Bold Forrester and walk down the road past Bere Farm and Soberton Mill, over the river onto a short footpath. This still leaves you having to cross the A32 on a bend, but it's a good deal more pleasant.

Shore, in 'Springs and wells of Hampshire' (p55), says 'South of Soberton, not far from the stream, is a pool or well called St. Clare's Well'. (This information is repeated, albeit in a garbled form, in Hope). Although the Clere family owned the area in the middle ages, I suspect that the dedication really is to the saint herself.
