Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Nottinghamshire

Giving its name to a suburb of Nottingham, its name is probably derived from either from a Saxon landowner Bulla or from bubbling up or ‘bulling’. Folklore states however a wild angry bull reached here and found a stone in his way and tearing a piece off of it which formed a spring. Does this bull legend suggest a pagan origin of the well or suggest some tribal association as noted above, certainly an Elizabethan map records an Oxwell in the area and this may refer to the same spring. The springhead in the 1800s and early 1900s was often frequented by locals who swam in the pool. Its water was noted good for eyes. The site was filled in in the early 20th century, but its waters now arise at the Moorbridge Nature Reserve.

Bull well the origin of the name by Andy B on Sunday, 28 March 2021
(User Info | Send a Message)
Sorrystate writes: I read with interest your article on Bull well and the origins of the name. Your information is not correct. The origin of the name Bull well is a man named Bonington was charged by a bull but he managed to step aside and the bulls horn went into the rock, when it pulled its horns out water flowed out of the rock.

Over an old door of Bulwell St Mary's school there is a round plaque in stone depicting Bonington and the Bull. There is also a Bonington school in Bulwell
