Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery
Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : February 2005, looking west from the OS trig point on the top of Old Winchester Hill. In the foreground is one of the enormous bronze age barrows (grid reference SU64042056), which has been hollowed out at some point (by those in search of treasure?). There are a variety of barrows in and around the hillfort. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow Cemetery in Hampshire

The chalk spur named Old Winchester Hill is the site of a Bronze Age barrow cemetery, pre-dating the Iron Age hillfort on the same site. The barrows are aligned in three groups - east-west along the central spine of the spur, north-south to the west of the hillfort and east-west along the false crest of the hill (partly overlain by the southern counterscarp bank of the hillfort). None of the barrows are in perfect condition as they have been disturbed by the construction of the hillfort, ploughing, antiquarian digging, animal burrows, and more recently by visitor pressure and mortar bombardment during Second World War artillery training on the hill.

The most prominent group of barrows lie on the central spine of the spur, within the Iron Age hillfort. Going from west to east...
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU64042056. Mound 2m high and 26m diameter. Large central hollow. Ditch 2-5m wide and 0.5m deep.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU64082055. Mound 2m high and 18m diameter. Depression at centre from antiquarian digging. Infilled surrounding ditch.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU64112053. Mound 1.5m high and 18m diameter. Hollow centre, appears lowered and spread. Infilled surrounding ditch.
  • Possible pond barrow at grid reference SU64132053. Circular depression 1.5m deep and 13m diameter. Surrounded by slight bank, 0.2m high and 2 to 4m wide.
Another barrow group lies just to the west of the hillfort's western counterscarp bank. They have all been lowered and spread by ploughing. From north to south...
  • Neolithic oval barrow at grid reference SU63912065. Pear-shaped mound 1.2m high, 25m long, 12m wide. Infilled ditch on all sides except north. The oldest barrow on the hill.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU639?206?. Mound 0.3m high and 14m diameter. Infilled surrounding ditch.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU63912065. Mound 1.2m high and 17m diameter, with hollow centre. Infilled surrounding ditch.
  • Possible saucer barrow at grid reference SU63902062. Central mound 0.5m high and 15m wide, with a narrow berm on the northern side. Surrounded by a ditch and outer bank which partly underlies the counterscarp bank of hillfort and mound of the barrow to the south.
  • Double-disc barrow at grid reference SU63902059. Two low mounds, both 0.5m high and 10m diameter on an oval platform with ditch to east and west. Hollows at centre of both mounds.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU63882061, just to the west of the above alignment. Low central mound 0.4m high and 14m diameter. Surrounded by an infilled ditch.
There are several barrows protruding from the southern counterscarp bank of the hillfort.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU64102045(?), semicircular mound protrudes, 0.7m high and 22m in diameter.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU64142044(?), 30m to the east of the above. Semicircular mound protrudes, 0.6m high and 22m in diameter.
  • Bowl barrow 20m further on to the east of the above, mound 0.3m high and 11m in diameter.
  • Saucer barrow at grid reference SU64292044, on the same alignment as the above three barrows. Destroyed by ploughing, but visible as soil-mark at south-east corner of hillfort.
  • Bowl barrow at grid reference SU64322047, destroyed by ploughing but visible as a soil-mark just to the north-east of the above saucer barrow.

For searching purposes, the barrows lie in two Hampshire parishes: "Corhampton and Meonstoke" and "Exton". Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery
Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : February 2005. View of the rare double-disk barrow (centred on grid reference SU63902059) found just outside the western entrance to the hillfort. The hill is a barrow cemetery as well as a hillfort, and the barrows pre-date the construction of the defences. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery
Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : June 2006. Still learning to use my new camera here, with a very shallow depth of field. Flowers and grasses on the chalk downland in the foreground, with the ridge of Old Winchester Hill out of focus in the background - showing the barrows there in silhouette. Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : The pond barrow (grid reference SU64132053) within the hillfort on Old Winchester Hill, from the north-west. There are several bowl barrows aligned on the top of the hill, with this pond barrow to the east. This is a composite image from two separate photos. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery
Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : The pond barrow (grid reference SU64132053) within the hillfort on Old Winchester Hill. The other more conventional barrows on the top of the hill are towards the left of the photo. This is a composite image, made from two separate photographs. Unfortunately the lighting from the overcast sky doesn't give a particularly good impression of the shape of this earthwork. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : A different view of the rare double-disk barrow (centred on grid reference SU63902059) found just outside the western entrance to the hillfort - taken from the hillfort rampart to the south of the western entrance.

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery
Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : In the foreground are two of the round barrows to the west of the hillfort, their mounds show up clearly against the shady trees behind. The barrow on the left is at grid reference SU63882061 and the one on the right is at grid reference SU63902062. Beyond that is the Meon valley with Beacon Hill on the far side (the site of another barrow cemetery).

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion : A composite photo showing the view east from the trig point within the hillfort. On the left is an engraved plaque describing the view, beyond that is the mound of one of the large barrows (grid reference SU64082055) on the ridge of the hill, with its hollowed out summit.
