St. Anne's Well (Caversham)
St. Anne's Well (Caversham) submitted by DavidCWoods : There are single steps on either side to allow the visitor to see into the interior – clearly deep, the brick facing gives way to stone below ground level. Some greenery emerged from the walls, but the bottom of the shaft was visible. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Berkshire

Caversham is an ancient settlement, and a shrine existed here beside the River at the time of the arrival of the Normans. Later, a chapel dedicated to St. Anne was situated on the Caversham side of the first bridge here across the Thames.

I had seen references to the well a number of months before I managed to locate it. It is to be found, appropriately, on Priest Hill just next to the junction with St. Anne’s Road. Interestingly, St. Anne’s Road does not appear on the 1882 OS map, and Priest Hill was then known as Priest Lane.

St. Anne's Well (Caversham) submitted by DavidCWoods : The well itself is nicely preserved; it is by the side of a suburban road, and has a brick surround to about five feet, with an ornate “birdcage” style grill covering the top. (Vote or comment on this photo)
