thereddragon visited on 20th May 2013 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 5 Access: 4 My favourite in Normandy. That processional path looks very interesting!

TheCaptain couldn't find on 24th Apr 2005 This T shaped gallery grave is the only one of this kind surviving in Normandy and is to be found in a zoo park near to the village. However on the day of my visit this park was well and truly shut and looked like it hadn’t been open in many years and was becoming very decrepit. No chance of getting in to see the monument. Later note. Having seen the 1:25000 ign map of the area the dolmen is marked beside the little lane which runs down to the lakes along the western edge of the park. In fact its probably almost exactly where I stopped and had a look around to see if I could spot anything. If I am in the area again I will know where to look.

I popped along on a very grim day :(
I was fortunate that the President of the Association of the friends of St Symphorien was able to give me a personal tour of the site. Access is restricted due to the animal populations in the environs.

Wow!

Aside from the obvious there are many other interesting features such as the processional path and much more, I'm sure, as yet undiscovered.
Apparently, a debate is raging amongst the archeological community as to whether the site should be reconstructed. In recent times large falling trees have done a fair amount of damage.

Best site I've visited in this area. I thoroughly recommend a visit. Very welcoming multilingual staff and a nice cafe.

Open in 2013 on the following dates 1&2/6 & 20&21/7 & 10&11/8 & 14&15/9. Please check on their website.

I shall dig out some more info on this structure.....

Open days at the Parc de Saint Symphorien, September 15 & 16 2012 by Andy B on Friday, 15 June 2012
(User Info | Send a Message)
In the south of Normandy, a few miles away from the Mont Saint-Michel,
imagine a beautiful botanical set, the park of an old castle, and discover at Saint Symphorien des Monts...
how the 18th century imagined parks around castles...
strange animals, rare European species and interesting breeds from around the world...
contemporary artists’ creations along the park’s promenade...

Closed since December 26, 1999, because of the storm that destroyed a large part of the west of France, the Parc de Saint Symphorien des Monts works hard to re-open its gates to the public.

After a year and a half of renovation, thanks to the volunteers’work, the park can start showing its beauties to the public. Of course, everything is not finished, but the achievements have reached a stage where a visit becomes a pleasure.

Two weekends of exceptional openning will allow you to discover the park: June 2&3 for the "Rendez-vous aux Jardins" and September 15&16 for "les Journées du Patrimoine". Find all the information ont he Openning Page Ouvertures.

There are also volunteer weekends to help restore the park as much as possible. If you want to give a hand, click on the Association Page.

Re: Besnardière allée couverte by Anonymous on Thursday, 14 June 2012
I have been looking at your site and see you have not been able to access the dolmen in St Symphorium. I thought you would be interested to know that the park is now being reopened. There will be two voluntary work weekends and the place will also be open to the public for a couple of specified days.
The 'Parc' is also on facebook and there is a photo of the dolmen.
