An early Iron Age farm occupied this site atop Little Butser: a chalk spur projecting north from the Butser Hill plateau. The steep sides of the spur provide a natural defence and Butser Hill shelters the site from the prevailing southwesterly winds. According to Hampshire Treasures coarse sherds, quern fragments and pot boilers were found in this area.
Between 1972 and 1989 Little Butser was the site of an experimental archaeology centre: the original "Butser Ancient Farm", which relocated to a much more accessible site near Chalton in 1991. The Butser Ancient Farm website provides many details of the farm's purpose, research and history. The most obvious remains of the project at Little Butser are the rounded rectangular earthworks which once surrounded the experimental settlement.
Access Little Butser is within the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The nearest car park is at Butser Hill picnic area: see the Butser Hill page for details.
