Ancient Cross in Yorkshire (North)
Located at the very northern end of the village at the Kirkgate / Hamley Lane T Junction. It is a large uncut stone slab with a hole in it mounted on a modern cobbled stone base. Writing in 1994, Elizabeth Ogilvie and Audrey Sleightholme in their book “An Illustrated Guide to the Crosses on the North Yorkshire Moors” page 23 say that the cross had only been recently set in the cobbled stone base and previous to that it had stood in a mediaeval type base. Old OS maps show it named as Little Cross and there is some suggestion that it may have been a prehistoric standing stone reused as a wayside cross. There is also an indentation on it which suggests that a plaque may have been mounted on it at some stage, also the hole through it is modern. It is a wayside cross marking the route to Lastingham a place of Christian worship since 654AD when a monastery was established there by King Ethelwald of Deira.
This is Pastscape Monument 60190 and more details can be found there.
