TheCaptain visited on 21st Nov 2004 To the south of the village of Jurques the D.577 road curves its way up and over a forested ridge. At the top of this hill to the east of the road is a small picnic site and a signpost to La Pierre Dialan dolmen, highlighted as a tourist place on the IGN maps. Walk about 500 metres along the track through the forest and on the right, just before the woods end, about 40 metres from the path can be seen a pile of large stones, now becoming closely surrounded by a very large gravel quarry cutting its way into the hillside. Unfortunately I cannot be 100% sure that this is the actual Dolmen, as on the day of my visit, in pouring rain, there was a hunt going on, with many men out with their dogs, rifles and horns. Although the huntsmen would let me walk down the forest track, I was warned not to stray from the path, unless I wanted to be shot, so I couldn’t get to see the Pierre Dialan properly ! It was disappointing to not get to see the stones, but an interesting wet afternoon in the forest nonetheless, which caused much amusement telling the story to my waiting sister and nephew in the car at the picnic site. I have since found some information which says that this is possibly a natural rock outcrop.

Seen on a wet afternoon through the forest, this is the best I got to see this pile of old stones, using a telephoto lens. All the local villagers were out having a hunt through the woods, and straying from the track through the forest was distinctly disencouraged.

My Monday 10 October 2011 visit notes.

Following a successful visit to the Montchauvin alignements, decided to procede noth and have another look for the Pierre Dialan.

This third visit, and the stones were easy to find, no hunt going on in the woods, and no snow covering everything! Park in the little picnic area at the top of the hill and walk along the track eastwards into the woods and then along the top edge of the quarry right into the woods.

The visit was made easy, as the woodland has been marked out and fenced, presumably for sale or more quarrying, and signs to the Pierre Dialan were nailed to various trees. I guess that in future, this will be a very different place, although it looks like a good area around the stones is being left alone.

The stones now stand on what is a little headland jutting into the nearby quarries, but are well surrounded by trees. The headland has been crossed by a couple of ditches, but as to whether they are ancient, or more modern (wartime?) I do not know.

I was expecting just a large rocky outcrop, but in fact there are many stones here, and it looks like they have been arranged into a sort of rectangular enclosure. The main large stone lies on top of several smaller ones, and it would be possible to get underneath if you really wanted to!

Have to say I couldn't really figure it out at all, could it be the sort of remains of an allée couvert, adapted from the natural? Or is it possible that much of the surrounding rectangle of stones is the remains of perhaps a wartime lookout?

I dont know. But a fine place to visit.

I had another failed attempt at this stone on a different way back from my sisters yesterday. The hills here (Suisse Normande) were living up to their name, and are all still covered in snow about a foot deep, and only the main roads had been cleared by snowplough, a week on from any new snow. Compounded with a thick fog, there was no way I was going to be able to park the car anywhere to go wandering around in a dark wet forest to have another look!
