St James church is located on Church Lane in the village of Nunburnholme 3 miles east of Pocklington. In the church there is a pre-Conquest cross-shaft and a sheela-na-gig.

The Anglo-Saxon/Norse cross shaft dating from before AD 900 stands under the Norman tower arch. It has been resonably well restored after being found broken in a couple of places and embedded into the wall. On the front there are figures from the bible and also Norse characters - unfortunately not much is known with regard to who these figures represent. However, there is certainly a strong Norse influence in the carvings which need more investigative work.

There is also a sheela-na-gig dating from the Norman period.

See an article on the Nunburnholme Cross in the CBA Forum Plus journal. It proposes that the cross dates to 937-940 and depicts King Athelstan, Oda of Canterbury and St John of Beverley.
