Reigate Heath Barrows
Reigate Heath Barrows submitted by SolarMegalith : Well-preserved Barrow C on Reigate Heath (photo taken on May 2012). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow Cemetery in Surrey. A significant group of Bronze Age bowl barrows near Reigate consists of 7 mounds (4 unquestionable bowl barrows and 3 probable ones). The barrow cemetery is easily accessible as the mounds are located near the major footpaths on Reigate Heath.

Barrow A (TQ 23785054) is the most northernly located one, it is partly cut by the road.

Barrow B (TQ 23725048) is the largest and best preserved burial mound of this barrow cemetery. It is 1.9 m high and has 27 m in diameter.

Barrow C (TQ 23685047) is in quite good condition as well, however its northern part is eroding due to slumping of the hill.

Barrow D (TQ 23725042) is lower then barrows A-C, but still easily distinguishable.

Barrow E (TQ 23815028) is dubious, but cleared and well-distinguishable. Its well-defined northern edge and overall shape are quite convincing for me.

Barrow F (TQ 23765034) is dubious as well, not much is visible here.

Barrow G (TQ 23895022) is heavily damaged. During my visit it was fenced off and there was a notice informing about the eroding barrow.

Most of the heathland barrows in southern England are dated at 1500 – 1200 BC (Middle Bronze Age). They usually contain cremation burials and modest grave goods in comparison with the Early Bronze Age barrows. They were constructed within one operation and rarely re-opened.

Reigate Heath Barrows Survey by Andy B on Wednesday, 16 October 2013
(User Info | Send a Message)
During the winter of 2009-2010 a topographical survey of the barrow cemetery on Reigate Heath commenced. This area is centred at TQ 237504, and there are eight scheduled mounds. None of these mounds can be certainly identified as Bronze Age barrows although in the early 19th century a number of mounds were used to plant conifer clumps and finds in two of these suggested that they were burial mounds (Glover 1814). It is also possible that natural dunes and ridges of harder rock were used and the monuments cannot now be identified by above ground evidence alone.
